New! Peer Collaborator Program!
Parents of this same age group have been seeking programs that would allow their children to interact with typical peers and learn social skills. Now, into its 2nd year, through funds received from the Danberry Treasure Chest, the GLCA is working with Self Reliance Center, Autism Model School, and St. Francis De Sales High School to create and initiate a new pilot program that pairs adolescent and young adults with autism with "typical" high schoolers. This pilot program involves 16 young men from St. Francis De Sales High School who have completed an interactive training to learn about the unique needs and challenges of individuals affected by autism.
Historically many programs focus on teaching the individual with autism social skills, however, new research is showing that by providing training to typical peers on how to interact with them, they are included and considered a "friend" at a much higher rate. With their participation and feedback, they will help us change the lives of those affected by autism by helping us put together trainings, activities, and useful information that we can use to create a program we can replicate throughout Northwest Ohio.
